  •  The invented mandatory militia membership (17+ / 0-)

It's clear you don't know what a militia is or who it is mustered from.

Well regulated means that if the militia is to be called to duty, that it be under military command. It is not just an armed mob.

But the militia is mustered from civilian gun owners. Nothing in the 2nd Amendment says that only militia members can own guns, that only the militia itself owns the guns, or that the militia must be mustered for arms to be kept.

It is not clear at all where that belief comes from. Care to explain?

Okay, at my posting below yours.

But I do love the argument you present.

I believe the poster you are replying to gets the idea that the Constitution creates rights of the citizen, not protects ones that pre-exists the inception of this nation.

To the People of the State of New York:

Here, in strictness, the people surrender nothing; and as they retain every thing they have no need of particular reservations.

I go further, and affirm that bills of rights, in the sense and to the extent in which they are contended for, are not only unnecessary in the proposed Constitution, but would even be dangerous. They would contain various exceptions to powers not granted; and, on this very account, would afford a colorable pretext to claim more than were granted. For why declare that things shall not be done which there is no power to do?

Many people have forgotten this tidbit of our history. We were not making an agreement with an equal power, such as was the case previously with the British & their sovereign.

We were actually granting limited authorities to our created government.

How history is so easily forgotten is beyond me but when most Americans can't tell you where Washington DC is on a map, I guess understanding these historical facts would escape them.
