    The Assad regime would not have lasted as long as it has if it didn't have some popular support. This is a civil war, with the Christians and Alawites behind the regime, and a diverse collection of various groups, including radical Islamists as well as Syrian liberals, opposing Assad.
       A victory by the rebels would almost certainly leave Syria a failed state. It would, in fact, probably lead to an even longer civil war and possible breakup of the country.
      This is not a place where US forces should be involved. I don't know if the chemical weapons story is true, but I have no reason to believe it.
      Even if it is true, it is not a US problem.
