  •  My take (25+ / 0-)

No politician puts something on the table that they are not willing to negotiate.  I learned that in over 30 years of working in govt.

We must also remember that the original offer to put the social safety net on the table was made by the President himself.  This is not 13 dimensional chess.  By putting it on the table and still leaving it there, it automatically becomes vulnerable, if not this round, then the next and the next.  It is no longer sacred or untouchable.

    •  That's why I've been in such a rage for months (21+ / 0-)

I don't think people really picked up on how horrific it was for him to put Medicare eligibility age on the table in 2011.  It was a shout that Democrats are now willing to negotiate the 3rd Rail.  No.  You don't do that with your signature programs.  You don't negotiate away something that your parents and grandparents fought decades to achieve.  You don't give them back.  Sure, you can negotiate tax rates and tax deductions.  You can negotiate the specifics of weapons systems that come and go.  You can negotiate which states are going to get bridges and dams.  But you do not put signature programs on the table in an argument about something else.

Now, if they were doing comprehensive health policy and carefully evaluating how to improve healthcare and under what conditions you could phase in Obamacare to cover seniors or to phase in Medicare to cover everyone (which they should have done anyway!) maybe you discuss the age issues in your efforts to improve healthcare.

But you don't just throw Medicare on the table to be chopped up to get some short term fiscal fix.

      •  And somehow it never occurs to you (2+ / 0-)

that prior to 2009 Democrats were always seen as weak on defense, weak on Foreign Policy, fiscally profligate and wasteful.  Since that weakling Obama took the helm there's been a radical shift in the public understanding of which party to trust on all three fronts.  Obama lays out the bait and they hate him so much they grab it and reveal their true colors.

Oh woe to us, we have a President who's smart enough to play politics better than they do!  But he doesn't bully them, or call them assholes, or stoop to their level so we need discernment in order to see what's going on.

It takes more energy to watch outcomes and judge based on what actually happens.  So much easier if he'd just send us clearer messages and give the Republicans ample time to Luntz up their counter messaging.  We'd lose, but in a clear, progressive way.

I'm not looking for a love that will lift me up and carry me away. A love that will stroll alongside and make a few amusing comments will suffice.
