  •  Well they have (7+ / 0-)

a list of five key terms they have to use in each essay. Each term should be used to prove their argument. They get 10 points for each key term they define, as long as they define it fully in a paragraph, but they get docked 10 points if they just give me key terms without any kind of argument or flow (which some students will likely do).

So basically, without an intro/conclusion, it would be five independent short answers. But it's so easy to tie all the terms together into one essay, and the fact that students are apparently scheming ways to get out of writing the full essay just makes me facepalm. And the fact that they're asking me if they can do this...AAAHHHH!

      no bounds for today's youth.

When I was in college I tutored business classes and there was this one Econ professor everyone seemed to hate.  All I heard was how none of his tests had anything to do with the material they learned in class.  I finally got the chance to take a class from him when I took Price Theory.  I quickly realized why everyone hated him; he wanted you to think.

The best part was the final.  The professor offered the class three different types of finals, a closed book multiple choice, an open book essay test or a combo.  As much as I wanted an essay test since I actually understood the material and hate rote memorization test, I actually had to talk the class out of voting for it because I knew at least half the class would likely fail it.  They were so stupid they didn't realize an open would test would have no questions that could actually be answered just quoting from the book.

The class ended up settling on the combo test.  I think I opened the book twice during the whole 90min allotted during the essay portion and that was just to confirm some names.  One of the nest classes I took in college.  Made me disappointed I didn't add Econ as a third major.

I must end each day with a dose of Top Comments. A TC diary is a must for developing the calmness I need to get the required eight hours of sleep. - cohenzee
