  •  It's all about the money - but it isn't (13+ / 0-)

Whenever you hear the Hannitys of this world gassing about how evil unions are, if you can stand to listen, it always comes down to money.
    1) Unions take you money and give you nothing
    2) Unions give your money to politicians you don't support
    3) Unions make stuff too expensive for you to buy
    4) Unions make employees too expensive for business
    5) Unions make products too expensive to compete in the World marketplace.

Money, money, money - it's quite revealing when you think about it. That's all they're really worried about.

    Nothing about safe working conditions.
    Nothing about decent work hours
Nothing about holidays, vacations, sick leave
    Nothing about retirement
    Nothing about proper training
Nothing about liability or legal help
    Nothing about discrimination or harassment

What it comes down to is they think of workers as some kind of commodity - interchangeable, disposable, to be obtained at minimal expense and discarded if necessary.

They'll be bringing back workhouses next.

    •  The things they don't think about (17+ / 0-)

Whether it be the Hannity's, or the plain Janes and Joes who want to see the unions reined in, they don't think about that list for a couple of reasons.

First, they take it for granted. 40 hour week, week-ends off, paid holidays, OSHA regs - they've always had that stuff, and they figure that's how it always was and always will be. They have no clue where it came from, and less of a clue that it can easily be eroded away.

Second, if challenged about those issues many take the stance that it just makes business sense. Employers will do that on their own because it makes for a more productive and profitable workplace. Of course, if that were the case the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory would have been a model of safety and generosity.

      •  Plus, the Hannitys don't want to talk about it (7+ / 0-)

They get paid very well to NOT talk about it.

      •  And consider those who don't earn (0+ / 0-)

an hourly wage, and are usually anti union.

Including those on salary (for "blue collar" jobs), commission, and "piece work" (Interstate Truck Drivers) paid by the mile.

Usually do not have the benefit of overtime pay, and routinely work 80hrs or more per week.

Add to that the 1099 employment class (often abused) contract workers, the exploitation of the US workforce spreads much further than most people realize.

If not us ... who? If not here ... where? If not now ... when?

    •  No hope...until (0+ / 0-)

we act on the knowledge it is literally impossible for us millions to put out all the fires these few sociopath billionaires are throwing at us.  Every institution of a civilized society is threatened by the millions they pay to sow chaos.  We can never defend against all the pain they cause.  They buy laws.  The only recourse is to specifically act against the buyers of the laws.  Not the politicians, they are only blind dupes w/o souls.  It's the kochs, the adelsons, the de vos's the petersons, the waltons and a few score others.  We are trying to plug too many holes in the dyke.  It's only a few score malignant sociopaths who are paying for all of this calamity.  Stop them and all else can be addressed.

      Civilization is socialism.

      They're called privately run prisons.

The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honored and looked up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage laborers. - The Communist Manifesto
