    but, perhaps the other societal changes taking place in '68 also had something to do with their paranoia?

      Same decade as three major assassinations in the US. I'm not even looking at the number of worldwide assassinations in that same period of time.

          to defend themselves with firearms should that be their choice?

          Denise Velez' grandfather drove off the KKK with his shotgun iirc the story right, the Panthers were about defense against an out of control police structure...and goaded into it  in part because (comment above) the FBI thought they could further marginalize support for the Black Panthers among the liberal supporters by arming them...and also give them an excuse to gun them down and not have to carry all those pesky drop guns to justify their murdering of black people.
