I had no idea...except for the ww2 bombers and they were just not for humans. My first reaction is omg, 'not me, no farkin way'...followed quickly by a 'where do I sign up'?

A great description of takeoff. I'm not a flier, but I sorta kinda get a sailor I could say this is three dimensional sailing, with lots and lots of fire, but I shouldn't. I have sailed boats as goofy as this, couple almost killed me too.

so runway steering is done by rudder pedals, and thus only the giant rudder from air from the jet blast, not the nose wheel or gear steering?

Sounds like you needed a tugboat. or a couple.

As to the noise, at about 13 I flew in a C-119, no earphones, sat right between those great giant engines, no noise insulation, no headphones, no cotton in the ears, jes git on board!...quite an experience to yell as loud as you could and not hear a sound you made...for a couple of hours!...and be pretty deaf afterwards.

And the 'turn in the barrel', heh, I get that. As a clown that is... my cousin the rodeo clown.

    Good stuff, thanks a bunch!

I'm a sailor also. A wing is just a parallel sail or vice versa.

      •  I haven't sailed a wing yet but have rotating mast (2+ / 0-)

        on a catamaran.

google '126 mph land sailing record' and watch that thing, a wing masted land sailor...doing 126 mph, look at the yaw and vibration...maybe you will also see the wing masted catamarans (pitchpoling, heh)(yikes, a yacht crash!) in the america's cup at the you tube site also.

catamaran, four foils in the water, one or two above..and then there's the foil supported sailing record holder at one point doing 52 mph and doing an end over flip into the water.

then look for moths 'Moth wing masts and hydrofoils' utube...but no kerosene or jet fuel.

one of my sailing pals quit because he was going to Santa Ynez and the back country with his spiffy glider.

        No  engine noise either....owwwwch!
