  •  Democracy is often an indictment of the people (18+ / 0-)

    who showed up to vote.

Our side has a lot to work through in the next election, and these jackasses are basically making our ads for it.  But in the end, elections have consequences.

I'm living in an age that calls darkness light.

      to vote?

      •  How about an indictment of good people who (6+ / 0-)

refuse to apply for elected positions? The obligations of citizenship:

        to vote
        to hold office
        to serve on juries
        to provide material support
        to propose laws
        to enforce the laws

It is not necessary for everyone to do all, all the time, but it is necessary for most of us to take turns.
Citizenship is not a privilege; it is an obligation. People who come to live here for a very long time without applying for citizenship are freeloaders. Republicans, being separatists, recognize the similarities in freeloading immigrants, which let them feel both superior and condescending. Elitists are necessarily groupists, a more polite designation than "segregationist."
The thing about segregation, which the excluded tend not to appreciate, is that it isn't antagonistic. Segregationists need to be part of a separate group in order to feel they are SOMEBODY, special and important. They are self-centered without a sense of worth. So they rely on heritage and family connections and tradition. One suspects that's what makes recent migrants, who have left family and heritage behind, different. It also makes internal migrants, who leave negative circumstances behind, different.
Migrants tend to be resented by stick-in-the-muds.

There is plenty that can and actually must be done in terms of direct action to apply pressure on government officials in MI and ALEC and the local private sector. Without it, even more and better Dems in 2014 will be stymied and hard-pressed and possibly inadequately incented to actually get much done.
