  •  Not really. These republicans (1+ / 0-)

were all fairly elected.  Our democracy isn't run by plebiscite, we elect representatives with certain viewpoints and philosophies (or sponsors) to govern as they see best.  The MI electorate had plenty of information at the time every single one of these republicans were elected to predict this is what they would do if given absolute power.

    •  How does Gerrymandering fit into "fairly" (10+ / 0-)

As a matter of fact, the majority did not vote for a Republican.  Taken as a whole, Michigan voters preferred the Democrats messages and policies.  Obviously, something else besides just a simple majority is at work here.  By carefully selecting their voters cutting and splitting blocks of their opponents, the Republicans still have statewide majorities in the legislature elected by minorities in the electorate.  It may be legal, but it sure isn't based on even handed, or just rules, which is what fair means to me.

Create an independent redistricting commission to create competitive districts.  Arizona is climbing out of rightwing crazy status little by little now as a result of minimal gerrymandering.

The Commission was formed by the passage of Proposition 106 by the people of Arizona in the 2000 General Election. Proposition 106 amends the Arizona Constitution to create a five-member commission to redraw Congressional and Legislative district boundaries following the 2000 Census. Previously, the State Legislature was responsible for redrawing the lines. Many people believed this practice resulted in boundaries that served the politicians instead of the people of Arizona. The five-member Redistricting Commission acts independently of the State Legislature.

This year we gained four legislative senate seats and six legislative house seats.  Republicans still have a majority, but not a supermajority.  They will have to make deals with Dems to pass legislation.  We also sent 5 Democrats to the House out of 8 congressional seats.

Republicans in the legislature have kicked and screamed and dragged the commission into court several times, but the commission has prevailed, and we're better for it.

So they really are un-accountable to the people. The election has happened and they just happened to ignore the results. Upstream someone said "fascist" well, that seems the completely accurate word to describe this action.
