    Mississippi years ago. With the concentration of educated "sinners" in the one town of any size, maybe 10,000, every single election and county management precinct had a tentacle into that town. Essentially the county, minus the town, was divided into rough squares and rectangles each with a piece of the town. The incoming tentacles sometimes narrowed down to hundreds of yards to snake into the town.

    Had to make sure that "urban" vote was sliced and diced to abject futility in directing the county's politics.

    Since beer and wine consumption or possession was by those county subdivisions (many counties were completely "dry") it was possible to have a beer with lunch and look across the street to the "dry" tentacle. If I recall the story correctly, even drinking a beer in your front yard while trimming a hedge was ticketable as "public alcohol consumption" because that sin was visible from the road.
