  •  In our area, we have many immigrants from (4+ / 0-)

El Salvador and Guatamala. Like you, my experience is of people who work more than one job and all of their jobs are hard.
The public schools around here are heavily Latino. These students have parents who can barely speak English, but they show up for meetings and are devoted to their children. Many of them volunteer when parents are needed even though the amount of free time they have is minimal.
They remind me greatly of my grandparents -- people who came here with nothing but worked hard every day to make their children's lives better than theirs. The difference is that opportunity in the U.S. is much less than it was in my grandparents era. These parents may not be able to get far enough ahead to help their children very much, no matter how hard they work.
I often feel lazy when I am around Latino families because I know my life is so much easier than theirs.
