    Italians and Poles in the early part of the last century, and were in fact used against them. History has this way of repeating itself.

    My conjecture, which I think is supported by history, is that the primary way an ethnic group goes from "outsider" to "majority" status is for a new, scarier, more "foreign" group to emerge. Thus the Irish lost their reputation for drunkenness and pugnaciousness, not by going to AA meetings and attending anger-management classes, but by never having been as "foreign" as the Italian, Polish, and Jewish immigrants who followed them. In fact, the commonly-held belief that "successful" groups achieved that status through behavioral assimilation seems not to be backed up by any actual examples.
