    We're not just talking about numbers on a web page - we're talking about a real crisis that could affect real people. The further we go into this, the more we risk a double-dip recession, which means middle class people losing jobs, benefits, income. When we hit the debt ceiling, we can start by cutting out non-essential services, but at some point, we'd have to stop cutting Social Security checks, paychecks for our military, and other crappy things.

    Do we really want to do that to innocent people? Serious question. I know it's going to take some extreme actions to break the GOP's fever, but I think we need to truly, carefully think about whether we're ready to accept the consequences of doing that in this case. I'm not saying it's not worth it, only that I don't think we've thought this through enough.
