  •  unions are a generally a Democratic constituency. (1+ / 0-)

If unions gave predominately to Republicans, it's a sure bet there would be no "Right to Work" laws.

As some other posts here have reminded us, there was a time even a few decades ago when unions (not just police unions, either) freely endorsed Republican candidates, gave them money and got out the vote. The Teamsters in particular were known for this ... Nixon talks a lot on the Watergate tapes about getting them to do his dirty work ("They've got guys who will go in there and knock their heads off.") In return, Republicans talked piously about the importance of unions and refrained from passing all those laws that the conservatives and hard-core corporatists wanted to.

That changed with the air-traffic controllers' strike.

      •  It's a complex history, though (2+ / 0-)

Traditionally unions supported Democrats, until the civil rights movement and the anti-war movement scrambled some loyalties--certain union members felt threatened by the idea of competing with African Americans for jobs, and then there was the blue-collar resentment of those pinko college kids insulting the flag, etc. Nixon skillfully appealed to white working class resentment...his appeal to unions worked in parallel with his "Southern Strategy" for peeling off traditional Democratic constituencies.
