thinking on this issue.  I am strongly in favor of the decriminalization of marijuana, can't believe it's still illegal.  It's an absurdity.  However, I think the Feds should continue to fully enforce the federal statutes on this drug for one reason.

The only true fix to this idiocy needs to be a complete rewriting of our federal drug laws in Congress.  If the Feds begin non-enforcement or re-priortization of this, we're going to have this patchwork of state laws some liberal some tough and the people in the most progressive states will become complacent on this issue.  Those draconian laws filling our prisons with harmless Americans will remain on the books just waiting until we get some new religious zealot in office that decides it's time again to put the hammer down.

We need continued outrage over the moronic federal regulations so that they're targeted and wiped out or rewritten completely.  It sounds insane but I think we need to go after the head not the tails.

    •  Do you really think the Feds should be shaking (3+ / 0-)

college kids down for a few buds at the same time they're cutting deals to let banksters walk free after laundering almost a billion dollars in gang profits?

But I want the federal law dashed to the rocks.  Democrats won't always have control of the White House.  If the law remains a future President might get really draconian with it.  I hope states by the ton pass legalization laws, the public outcry against federal intervention remains high and Congress is forced to act.

Did you read a single thing I wrote?  And what does Wall Street prosecution have to do with marijuana.  Stop giving equivalency to these things.  A person using, growing, distributing pot is clearly in violation of federal law.  Prosecution is simple, direct, and easily proven.  A Wall Street case involves massive investigations, possible whistle-blower level of proof, complex webs of complicity, enormous resources of the Justice Department to go after the guilty plus those guilty parties can assemble huge resources - political, financial, and legal to fight back.  One individual prosecution (while it seems like a no-brainer and necessary to us) could take years to even assemble, carry the risk of losing, and have very nasty political consequences for a political party not in control of the media.  Stop with this black and white crap.  There's a whole lot of us out there that want badly to see Wall Street barons perp-walked to jail but also understand that it might not be a national priority given the enormous problems of the country.

I'm not suggesting that the Justice Department step up federal drug enforcement but I don't think it's smart for us to put the onus on them to make the change.  That said today Obama came out and said he wouldn't interfere in the states that have legalized use.  That seems reasonable.

          said.

The President said he won't order the Feds to step up efforts against "recreational users".

Jed did what he does - he intentionally distorted what was actually said.
