  •  At one time I was impressed withhim but he has (0+ / 0-)

become a spewer of his take... using his position as an old timer to suck in the  gullible. I don't happen to believe that having a body of work that some respect gives you the right to  spend the rest of your life using that as a battering ram to break through peoples mind set to impose your beliefs which can be informed by your age and politics.

There are several of them who pontificate now that they are now no longer coifed readers of copy placed before them. There are some truly great reporters working who don't get half the respect shown to the news readers who fit an appearance image people like. Richard who frequently has worked with Rachel is one. He does fabulous work and doesn't live in clean environments where he reads the work of others. For that matter Rachel, Colbert and Jon S have fabulous reporting teams behind them. But few know thier faces so Rather is considered one of the greats.

It does not matter if you agree with him or not ...  I wonder at all the effort to force others to fall in line. But thenexpect me to accfept your authority and agree. All the reactions do is re-inforce why I find him a gasbag. But them I quit watching any news show over a decade ago because I don't see the presenters as reporters but as actual news actors. It becomes more obvious as they climb in power and popularity and start exprssing thier own opinions. It is like people who love John Waynes movies thinking that the roles he played gave him some insights and knowledge others who didn't play cops or marines lack. My favorite line from a recent movie was "I'm not a doctor but I played one...".

And I would argue that what I believe does indeed matter... to me.

I don't know what you mean by forcing others to 'fall in line' and it's not clear if you mean Rather or me.  But assuming you meant Rather, I don't find him forcing anyone to buy his line.  It's just that younger news persons like Maddow gives Rather the respect that his tenure in the business has earned him.

Furthermore his role as anchor of the CBS Evening News followed his long years of trench reporting.  The phemon of glorified news models came along at the time when the news became an infotainment profit center.  When Rather was anchoring the news, it was not for profit and what he read was actually bonafide real news based on real reporting.  That's the real difference from his time to today.

Regardless of what you may think of him.
