  •  Here's Bill Black (0+ / 0-)

with the best explanation of the "fiscal cliff" bullshit I've yet seen. Warning, people who buy into the Obama and Democrats need to "continue to stand firm" against the Republicans won't like this.

But it would have been so hard to boil it down to how Black contends that Obama is not only willing, but eager, to drastically cut entitlement programs, be it out of a genuine belief that this would be good policy, or out of some combination of political weakness, craveness, or vanity? Because that was the gist of it.

Incidentally, although I've been vocal here in condemning any move on the part of Obama towards cutting these programs (in ways that harm beneficiaries or otherwise weaken them, and not in ways that make them more cost-effective and efficient and thus stronger), I've yet to see any indication that he'd really do this. We'll never know if that 2011 offer was for real or a bluff (let alone whether Dems would allow it). And, apparently, such cuts are once again off the table.

It may well be that Obama really is willing, if not eager, to hurt these programs. Or it may be that he's bluffing. A dangerous and perhaps foolish bluff, but still a bluff. I have no way of knowing. Although, of course, he is often praised by his supporters for allegedly saying what he means (which, though, is belied by the facts). And many of his appointments and public statements certainly reinforce the fear that he's ok with slashing these programs.

In any case, I hope he's a smart enough politician to know that if he ends up cutting these programs in ways that hurt beneficiaries, it'll destroy his legacy and cause massive political damage to Dems. AND be horrible policy on its face.

that he'll have the cuts enacted in such a way that the worst of their effects occur after he's left office.
