    There are many ways he could have addressed the issue, but coming out against legalization because he "doesn't want to encourage drug use" shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the issue.
    Although I think it is possible that he does in fact know better and is being political here.

    I understand that politically right now he cannot "encourage drug use" (never mind the beer summits and whatnot) but he could it seems to me at least start telling the truth about the failings of the war on drugs, and discuss truthfully the harm of suppression.

    I realize it would be unpopular with law enforcement types, and they are a powerful constituency -- but I am disappointed that President Obama is still pushing fundamentally false information.

    I don't know if as president he can or should "lead" the country to do away with prohibition ... but I do wish he would try anyway. I would like to at least see some sign that he knows the facts and understands the reality of the drug war. I did not see that in this interview.
