    "gift" is a noun.

    I know, I know- it's probably my own uptightness that responds negatively to modernisms in my mother tongue. I apologize if my response strikes you negatively. I just love my language and little things like this feel like someone bounced a penny off my brain.

      I know what you mean, it's a bit jarring when some of these neologisms (is that the right word?) intrude upon my settled world. We already had a word "give" that worked perfectly well, am I right?

      But perhaps this is the price of a living language. We probably wouldn't want the language to be forever frozen in whatever state it happened to be in when we first learned it.

        verb form is first used c. 1550.

        I don't know how old you guys are, but I'm guessing you're not that old.

          Sometimes I feel that old.

          So its use as a verb fell into disuse. I guess I'm going to have to get over it, no matter how odd it sounds.
