  •  I've already offered suggestions. (13+ / 0-)

    Repeatedly. Ad nauseum.

Single payer health care (mental health care)
    Jobs
    Marijuana legalization
    Jobs
    Education
    Jobs
    Better social safety nets

No one can just buy an assault rifle at a gun show. They've been regulated since the 30s.

Inside The Phoenix Gunshow: No Hassle To Buy Assault Rifles

And your seven suggestions are all wonderful progressive goals. And perhaps reduction of poverty, better education and more opportunity will take away some of the anger and hate that leads to violence. That would be wonderful.

But even if we did every single one of those things,

There will be mentally ill people who now can get guns MUCH TOO EASILY.

There will still be angry domestic abusers who now can get guns MUCH TOO EASILY.

There will still be alcoholics who get violent when they are drunk and who now can get guns MUCH TOO EASILY.

There will still be convicted felons who can walk into gun shows and get guns MUCH TOO EASILY.

There will still be angry white guys who are being driven to extremes of hatred and paranoia by the very people who supposedly want responsible uses of guns, and who now can get guns MUCH TOO EASILY.

Sorry, your suggestions are anodynes that entirely avoid addressing the essential issue. You can't possibly conceive of a single law or regulation that might make any of this better? Really?

The only entitlement that needs reforming is the inbred belief of the 0.1% that they are entitled to 99.9% of the wealth and 100% of the power.

No, those aren't assault rifles. Those are called assault weapons. There's actually a difference.

You can't possibly conceive of a single law or regulation that might make any of this better? Really?
When it comes to firearms, you're right. I don't see a law that'll pass that will have any discernible affect. We have 283 million firearms in this country in civilian hands. Most of which are not registered so they're easily transferred without paperwork. What do you suggest be passed?

        •  Thank you for the reasoned response. (8+ / 0-)

I am not familiar with the technical distinction between assault rifles and assault weapons. Shouldn't BOTH be regulated? Or banned completely from being in civilian hands?

So, I'd start with that: ban the sale of all assault weapons and rifles to civilians.

And I'd pass laws to strictly regulate gun shows. Get rid of the damn loopholes. Impose the same rules as are imposed on the sale of guns and ammo at shops. If that's not possible, then ban gun shows.

And I'd ban the sale of extended magazines. Simply not necessary for self defense or sport shooting. (I won't pretend to offer an exact definition. I'm not a gun expert. I'm sure many others can be more specific.)

Would that be enough? Probably not. But perhaps a good start?

            1. Rifles and shotguns of all types are used in less than 3% of gun crime.  So called "assault rifles" make up a small fraction of that 3%.  So they really aren't a statistically significant problem.

            2. The term "assault weapon" is a lie.  It's intended to make you think this is a fully automatic machine gun, which they aren't.  They function no differently than any other semi-auto rifle, they simply have slightly different ergonomics and styling, and are a bit more modular than "traditional" rifles.  They are no more lethal when used as weapons; less lethal actually, as they generally use calibers/chamberings of ammo far less powerful than most mid-to-large size game hunting rifles.  (And all of those "traditional" hunting rifles, semi-auto and bolt actions alike, can be directly traced to a prior military design.)  They can be used for hunting small-to-medium sized game just fine and are becoming very common in that part of firearms usage.

            3. Banning them will merely create another black market.  And nothing says "increased crime rates" like adding to the black market.

            4. The laws inside a gun show are exactly the same ones outside a gun show and at every gun store.  Every single one.  There are no "loopholes".

            5. "Simply not necessary for self defense or sport shooting."  Uh, sex who, and based on what criteria and evidence?  Every high-profile crime I can recall where an extended magazine was used, the magazine jammed.  They are not, usually, particularly reliable, and rarely used in crimes.

      •  Don't sweat the "convicted Felons" (7+ / 0-)

as over half of them are convicted of non-violent crimes.

Worry about those non-convicts demonstrated to be prone-to-violence, who avoid the Felony due to influence or a system that doesn't value certain physical actions* as-dangerous-as  possession of a salable amount of marijuana, SEC violations, or tax evasion.

I conceive of a law where those persons with mental health issues can be added or removed from the list with physician and court action, not always on, or always off as the system fails to understand the medical nature of mental illness.

        * bar fights, stadium fights, domestic violence - just three of many examples.
