  •  If you want to create outrage (8+ / 0-)

you either kill more, or you kill ... worse.

Children, cops, and of course politicians. Something to get people's attention.

Economics is a social *science*. Can we base future economic decisions on math?

    •  NRA (18+ / 0-)

Deeply cynical, greedy bastards who make $$$$ from gun and ammo sales, and don't hesitate to exploit RW hatred and fear in their quest for even more profit for them and their gun industry clients.

And then bully politicians and buy their silence and inaction.

"Socialist, Muslim Obama wants to take away your guns!!"

      SHAME!!!

They have been brilliantly successful. There are now 300,000,000 guns in this country. There are 32 deaths by gun violence every day.

The NRA long ago lost any credibility as a responsible organization whose mission is to promote responsible gun ownership and safety.

Hey NRA -- don't any of you have children? Do you really not give a damn?

      SHAME!!!

How many more massacres will it take?

The only entitlement that needs reforming is the inbred belief of the 0.1% that they are entitled to 99.9% of the wealth and 100% of the power.

      •  And before the 2nd A zealots here ask WHAT do I (9+ / 0-)

suggest? Because, you know, guns aren't the problem and nothing will make any difference.

So, a few very specific suggestions, not a single one of which hasn't been around for years:

Ban the sale of all assault weapons and rifles to civilians.

Pass laws to strictly regulate gun shows. Get rid of the damn loopholes. Impose the same rules as are imposed on the sale of guns and ammo at shops. If that's not possible, then ban gun shows.

(Did you know that anyone can walk into gun shows and leave with an assault weapon?)

Ban the sale of extended magazines. They are simply not necessary for self defense or sport shooting, and serve only to facilitate mass killing. (I won't pretend to offer an exact definition. I'm not a gun expert. I'm sure many others can be more specific.)

Strict background checks on all prospective gun owners. History of significant mental illness? History of domestic violence? History of convictions for violence related to alcohol or drug intoxication? History of any felony conviction? NO PERMIT.

Would that be enough? Perhaps not. But might it be a good start?

And not a single one of these suggestions is or should be an impediment to responsible gun ownership, or an unreasonable restriction of 2nd Amendment rights.

Just maybe, finally, there might be a glimmer of political will -- if we don't relent.

        •  Small clarification -- (6+ / 0-)

"Ban the sale of all assault weapons and rifles to civilians."

I didn't mean to suggest banning the sale of rifles -- that should have more clearly read,

Ban the sale of all assault weapons and assault rifles to civilians.

I only made the distinction because of a comment in the other diary about today's massacre, where the distinction was made in the comments.

The only entitlement that needs reforming is the inbred belief of the 0.1% that they are entitled to 99.9% of the wealth and 100% of the power.
