  •  A total, unmitigated waste of time. Obama will (2+ / 0-)

need every shekel of political capital he can muster to deal with less utopian problems foreign and domestic.

From earlier this year, here is a sobering assessment of American public opinion on guns and the NRA:

While I agree that there is no good reason to own high-capacity magazines, they are a very small element of gun crime, as are the dreaded assault weapons. By the way, I am not a gun owner and never have been.

    •  Small element, but big impact (0+ / 0-)

To say nothing should be done about high capacity magazines because they are a "small element" of gun crime is like saying that we should not outlaw drinking and driving because driving is just a small part of what people do when they are drunk.

Let's talk seriously about the limits of gun ownership in this country.  If the NRA has its way, gun ownership will soon be mandatory!

    •  So it's "utopian" (0+ / 0-)

to strive for a per capita murder rate approaching that of other civilized nations?

      You standards are very low.

Reaganomics noun pl: belief that unregulated capitalism can produce unlimited goods for unlimited people on a planet with finite resources and we the people can increase revenue by decreasing revenue.

      •  I think my standards are realistic. Given the (0+ / 0-)

Heller decision, any restriction on Second Amendment rights would require a constitutional amendment that would be ridiculously easy to block. I don't foresee any more restrictive gun laws in my lifetime, and I'm not that old.
