  •  Obama can start a conversation, but (6+ / 0-)

it will be a heavy lift for him since the majority of the country doesn't support gun control, Democrats in that aren't in safe blue seats won't follow him because in swing districts or red districts they'd be in a lot of trouble.

Perhaps the President can change some minds and the majority of the public will call for gun control, but I don't see anything changing nationally.   I do think that Connecticut will join Massachusetts in banning assault rifles on their own so we'd have two states that have strict gun control laws.

Washington and Colorado said that you've got to legalize it. Hope the DOJ respects that.

    •  The conversation doesn't have to be about (4+ / 0-)

      gun control.

      Since that's fated to fail.

The conversation has to be about the insane gun culture in this country - i.e., to get the worm to turn (or whatever the phrase might be) - similar to the way than over the course of less than half of my lifetime smoking has gone from being glamorous to being more or less a pariah.

Similarly, the conversation about guns should, no must, be started to at least an extent where (i) the POTUS can use his bully pulpit (which is beyond our control, of course) and (ii) (within our control) they are not celebrated on a progressive website such at DailyKos.  That's be a start that each and every one of can help out with.

      •  its so much deeper than smoking. (0+ / 0-)

Guns represent power and are far more glamorized than smoking could ever hope to be. You really think you can "do something" about the fact that action movies, video games, toy pistols, and certain sub-genres of rap music are what they are? Yeah, good luck w/ that. Tarantino, Rockstar Games, 100 Bullets, Killa Cam... I like these things.

How bout we talk about our country's FUBAR Mental Health system? Can we talk about that? I think that might be relevant.

"See? I'm not a racist! I have a black friend!"
