  •  Our library loans tools (7+ / 0-)

It's becoming very popular, as people get used to the idea that they don't need to pay a few hundred or thousand dollars to sit an object in the garage for months at a time between uses. They started about 4 years ago, and it took time for word to get around.

For liability insurance reasons, they don't loan chainsaws, pneumatic nailers/staplers, or table saws, but they do loan out just about anything else you can use for gardening and home improvement - things like a ditch-witch, which has limited uses, and which most people need once or twice in a lifetime. For many items, rental at a tool store would cost $100/day (or more) plus deposit, or you can swing by the library, borrow one for a couple hours, bring it back clean, and all it costs is the gas to and from the library. Plus you gain a bonus of some friendly conversation with a really nice librarian, and perhaps some of your neighbors.

I hope the idea catches on, elsewhere.
