    However, I would blame our political system as much as the culture.    When we have a system where at best it will take a great struggle to bring about a modest increase in tax rates for the rich, or a reform of the filibuster system--both proposals with clear majority popular support-- how likely is it that Obama could win a fight on an issue where the opposition is perhaps even more passionate and public opinion is more closely divided?

      of anything resembling effective gun control.  Maybe if we got 10 or 15 years to make appointments that would offset the Federalist Society crowd, we could at least reclaim the constitutional space to make laws which would make a difference.  But now?

      Don't get me wrong,  I would like to see gun ownership tightly regulated in this country.  But I'm skeptical that these are battles we can win anytime soon.  I'd love to find out I'm wrong, but I'm old enough to remember when the shooting of President Reagan was going to convince the country that we needed effective gun control.....
