illness? People don't just wake up one morning drop off the deep end of earth and go on a killing spree, there are almost always warning signs, signals they are headed for trouble.

    •  Thousands are killed by sane, armed thugs every yr (6+ / 0-)

way more than by insane people.  Way more.

      •  The mass killings are done by individuals who (0+ / 0-)

are mentally ill, and I thought that was the discussion.

another way. We need to look at the real causes of this violence.

            •  How fast can you kill 28 people with a knife? (8+ / 0-)

How many kids are killed in knife drive byes each year?

              •  Guy killed 22 kids and an adult in china (0+ / 0-)

banning guns isn't the answer or problems are much deeper than that and we need to have a discussion about everything tied up in gun violence not just hte gun part

                •  You are wrong. 20+ were stabbed, but 4 were killed (6+ / 0-)

But if he had had a gun...

                •  That is NOT true. 22 wounded NOT dead in China. (1+ / 0-)

There is a recommended diary on that very subject up at this moment. Please avail yourself of the facts.

The point was we need to have this discussion about all the problem not just the gun part.

To pretend that injury vs. death is not an important distinction is to be untethered from reality. I'll take my chances in a room with a crazy man armed with a knife. Guns change the equation completely, so it's not just about mental illness.

                      •  The distinction is crucial (1+ / 0-)

And I agree that stricter gun laws are needed. Still stricter gun laws don't address the root causes behind these incidents. Until we change our national priorities, we will see more and more of this sort of thing.

The underlying issue is that this country glorifies violence over human life - and that starts right at the top with our government's warmongering approach to dealing with the rest of the world as well as it's proclivity to resort to violence and torture of its own citizens while failing to address human needs. Americans who murder innocent men, women and children overseas are called "heroes." Presidents who order such killings are called "leaders." People who need mental health care are denied it. Poor people are poor because they're "lazy and worthless."

Quoting from The Spirit Level by Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett: "In summary, we can see that the association between [income] inequality and violence is strong and consistent; it's been demonstrated in many different time periods and settings. Recent evidence of the close correlation between ups and downs in inequality and violence show that if inequality is lessened, levels of violence also decline. And the evolutionary importance of shame and humiliation provides a plausible explanation of why more unequal societies suffer more violence."

“The probability that we may fail in the struggle ought not to deter us from the support of a cause we believe to be just.” – Abraham Lincoln

        •  multiple deaths (0+ / 0-)

or a single death at a time, 11,000 americans die annually due to gun violence.

the issue us not semi-automatic guns or assault weapons, it is guns, period.

      •  Perhaps like the guy the other night that took a (6+ / 0-)

rifle and killed his drunk roommate in a fight over how his pork chop was cooked.

Ask yourself, how in the hell does a fight over a fripping pork chop escalate to a gun death?

And for those that suggest he could have used a knife, well, it happened in a kitchen, and it wasn't a knife, it was a damn gun.
