  •  The Violence in Philadelphia in 1844 (1+ / 0-)

An early version of the Know-Nothings called the Native American Party started two riots in Philadelphia in 1844.  The first riot was sparked when the "Native Americans held a rally in predominantly Irish Kennsington to protest the halting of the use of the King James Bible in the public schools as a reader.  This riot resulted in the burning of two Catholic Churches.  The second riot ended in the militia and the rioters exchanging musket and cannon (thats right, cannon) fire at each other because the militia was defending another Catholic Church.  Anti-Immigration, religion, and violence - pillars of American Conservatism for 170 years.

    I aim to misbehave.
