    cynical and opportunistic. The U.S. and Great Britain had been wheedling for a Soviet second front against Japan even before the final Nazi collapse. Stalin strung both Churchill and Roosevelt along with vague promises, but after suffering horribly at the hands of the Nazis with (in their minds) very little help from the West, the Soviets had no inclination to take unnecessary casualties in an attack on the Japanese.

    It's evident to most analysts that the Soviets built up a massive force, waited until Japanese forces were literally on the ropes, and then quickly grabbed all the territory they could from the collapsing Japanese empire, at very little cost.

    Not that one could blame them.
