  •  I accidentally happened to tune into (0+ / 0-)

    Lars Larson discussing the tragedy.

His thought, along with a liberal caller, said that security is better at hospitals, among other locations, and suggested (paraphrasing) that entrances to schools could have a lock-down area where a visitor would use a com to request entrance.  Depending on their answer, and if there is a question about why they are there, allowing them in would require a pre-screening.

Now, I'm not exactly sure of the sequence of events, but if the mother of the shooter had been notified that her son was there, school officials could have sent her a com to determine if the visit was a pre-planned one.  Who knows, maybe the mother would have said he was unstable and not to let him in.

By no means a fool-proof way to handle it, but it sure might reduce or deter this madness.

found shot to death in her home, apparently by her son.  He then proceeded to the school to continue his rampage.

    •  And thus completing the process.. (5+ / 0-)

...of turning schools into prisons.  All it lacks is guard towers.

      •  Ya know, I used to agree (0+ / 0-)

with that sentiment, but schools need to be a place where staff and students are safe - like when I was growing up.  Gun control, bans on automatic weapons, etc., isn't going to be a fail-proof way of preventing this either.

        Something HAS to be done.

She apparently didn't make it to school.

They have a new security system; he apparently got through it because they knew him.

At least that's the latest reporting.

security.  Though certainly no option should be off the table for discussion.

Personally I would like to see certain types of guns and ammo less readily available to people in this country.

    •  Parents will never support (0+ / 0-)

jumping through hoops to get their kids.  Even if you explain that its for their kids' safety. I work in an elementary school in Brooklyn, and the kids say they wish we had a metal detector, because they know that some kids have weapons.

I STILL want to see Mitt's taxes.

      •  And I'll bet those parents (0+ / 0-)

would think twice about that if they ever considered that their kids might be in danger.  The actual risk can never be known.

These days, I'd gladly jump through several hoops.
