    They should oust him.

Not speaking up against this kind of thing is an insult to true believers and damages all religion.

denying him membership in their groups.  They can speak out against his nonsense in unison, all signing on.

cheerleader squad or out of the Boy Scouts, or revoking their electrician's or driver's license. While a specific congregation or denomination might expel or excommunicate someone whose behavior is deemed so destructive it threatens to cause material harm to the community, our covenant relationship with God is not conditional; the mantle of faith has no stripes that can be ripped off the sleeves. It's sort of like stumbling on the racist, homophobic, misogynist, or misanthropic leftists in our midst here at DK -- they can be kicked out of our cloister, but of course they're still leftists free to speak and behave as such out in the wider world, warts and all, no matter how it might reflect on us -- and there's pretty much not a damned thing we can do about it.

          (b) This isn't like a color line. It's not up to me to judge others according to whether they are "Christian enough" to "pass." God works in their lives as S/He will, just as S/He works in my life. Who knows how much more twisted Bryan Fischer would be if he were not in a covenant relationship with God? I think he's a diseased, batshit crazy, dangerous hypocrite and liar who arguably has on his hands the blood of LGBT people. But that simply underscores the fact that he, like me, is yet another of God's salvage projects.

          (c) There is no "They" monolith in our messy universe of faith, no Supreme Pipeline through which to express our disapproval -- especially not when a notable % of denizens in our messy universe agree with this twisted man.

You've probably missed many years of official pronouncements by various mainline Christian churches. This is because no legion of satellite trucks shows up to capture exhortations to the U.S. government to feed the poor, devote more money to child protective services and public defenders, withdraw from Afghanistan, sign the landmine and persons with disabilities treaties, dismantle our nuclear arsenal, respond to global warming, invest in jobs programs, close Guantanamo and the School of the Americas, resist calls for fiscal austerity, and all that other boring noise that doesn't bleed and certainly doesn't sell soap.

But you didn't miss the 2008 and 2012 federal elections, in which a majority of the voters who delivered for the Democrats were religionistas.

Based on demands, by people outside of organized religion, that proper-thinking religious proponents oust or shun or somehow punish those who disappoint, infuriate, sicken, or even endanger us, I know it must be frustrating to some that moderate/liberal people of faith are so unwilling to pretend we're authorized to punish or purge on God's behalf. For better or worse, it just doesn't work that way.

          Hi ho.
