    you how appalled I was at Jar-Jar et al. the originals weren't exactly art cinema, but the kiddie-izing of it was awful hard to take.

    Remember the scene in "Mary Poppins" where Burt dances with the cartoon penguins? One of the cartoon band players had a weird instrument: a long neck like a guitar, surmounted with cymbals, and who knows what else on it. I WANTED one, and of course there was no such thing (if anybody actually makes a Dune tarot deck, let me know.) Nowadays, if there's anything at all a child might want, e.g. the vizier's scepter from "Aladdin," it is indeed available in toy stores. I liked the self-referential humor in "Jurassic Park" when they showed all the merchandise for sale. But the gross commercialization of it all is sad.
