    To the extent a "Repeal the 2nd" movement succeeds in money and public support, the far-right gun lobby will be far more willing to make sensible regulations.

      And if the tea party can float amendments about marriage being between a man and a woman, I don't see why progressives can't float an amendment like this one.

      ...they'll just do what they're doing now, and keep moving the rightward edge of the Overton Window to the right, holding the Republicans accountable.

      If what you really want is sensible regulations, start with sensible regulations. Unfortunately, both sides of this discussion have very different ideas about what constitutes a sensible regulation (e.g. a new assault weapons ban or a handgun ban strikes me as odious and ineffective).

      Even then, I'm not sure we're addressing the cultural phenomena that turn guns into fetishes and violence into manhood, both of which have more to do with today's events, IMO, than the legality of a type of firearm.
