I just watched the ABC Evening News here on the West Coast, and it brought tears to this 55-year old male's eyes.  They interviewed another teacher who herded all her students into a small bathroom and locked the door to get away from the gunman.  What got me was when she said she kept telling the students she loved them because she wanted that to be the last thing they heard if the gunman started firing through the door (tearing up again as I type this).  Later on, she had the presence of mind to demand the police slide ID under the door when they arrived to prove they weren't the shooter.  ABC News also did a feature about how the teachers at the school trained for such an incident and undoubtedly saved more lives.

As someone with kids in public schools and who has worked with their teachers as part of the PTA, what has pissed me off to no end is the constant denigrating by conservatives of public education and in particular unionized teachers in public schools.  The adjectives I used in the title are among some that I have heard on talk radio and Fox News.  Funny how someone whom we trust to educate our kids is greedy and overpaid for wanting to be able to live a middle class lifestyle while a CEO who gets paid 400 times the average worker while outsourcing jobs is held up as someone to be admired.  I hope that if anything good comes out of this tragedy, that it is renewed respect for teachers and what they do for this country.

The British sent their criminals to Australia and their religious nuts to America. The Australians got the better of that deal.
