    20 dead kids.

Look at your fingers...then look at your toes...there is a dead kid for every finger and every toe today.

Some of the  1st responders will probably in therapy for years to come.

    •  I had an occasion to see a seminar (5+ / 0-)

led by one of the first responders of the fire that killed dozens of people in that Rhode Island bar (remember the pirotechic band display gone wrong?).

He was really, very obviously damaged years later. He had to sue the police dept to get disability. But just seeing him try to address a conference on crime scenes, was really sad. I it was kind of sad to think he had to fight for disability. I'm not a professional, but I can see a broken man who was having trouble functioning.

      •  There's a street-level railroad crossing about (6+ / 0-)

5 miles north of where we live (you live in the D.C. area right? -- I'm talking about the one on Randolph Road right off of Rockville Pike). It's known for its suicides, people purposely walking onto the tracks just as a train is coming -- and trains are unable to stop quickly enough.
I always felt terrible for the suicide victims, for the awful hopelessness that led them to make this terrible decision.
But then I heard a report on the train engineers who operated the trains that end up killing these people. It's impossible for the engineers to stop the train in time to avoid killing the person so they are trapped in this horrific moment, helplessly watching their train approach and then kill the person standing on the tracks. Apparently it has long-term traumatic effects on them.
Now, in some ways, I feel sorrier for them than for the people committing suicide because they have been forced into killing another human being.
