    •  Heat of the moment, and utopian at that. (3+ / 0-)

Apart from one or two comments early on, I very quickly altered my stance to amend, because bans simply aren't realistic in modern America, no matter how horror-stricken people are at any given moment.

in the face of good reasons and arguments. This is because my support is not predicated on absolute value of "the law," which I know to frequently be wrong. It's based on practical assessment/analysis of the situation at hand. You're a nurse. I've compared it to diagnosing a patient: you can't jump to conclusions, but first, need to thoroughly examine a specific set of symptoms even when something seems obvious. Then you can establish an operative hypothesis to treat that problem. If it doesn't work, back to the drawing board.

Some people are simply very good debaters.  I prefer to try to stick to actual data, and then follow the path you suggest later in your comment.  I'd rather have something that works, even if I find it ideologically abhorrent.  If abstinence education actually worked in preventing teen pregnancies, I'd laud it.  (With, of course, all of the usual caveats about creating other unintended consequences that might actually be worse, such as setting up dysfunctional relationship issues among teens...)

I'm certainly all for abandoning ideas that have been given a fair trial and failed, though.

that I mean data and not debate. I teach rhetoric in writing, amongst other things, and I am not interested in sophistry or smooth talking. By argument, I mean those elements of persuasion which involve appropriate pathos, appropriate ethos, and appropriate logos: I am more influenced, in generally, by the latter two.

Cheap arguments never fly with me. In fact, I really don't and won't argue. 99% of the time, it strikes me as inane. One thing I know is that it's hard to sway another person. Thus I'm always open to new reasons, new claims, backed by strong enough points of support to convince me to re-think something. But a good debater? Transparent unless the argument made is a strong one.

It was a terrible heated day and my views can evolve also.
