Deepest condolences to you and your community, Greg.  I know from long-ago experience that gun violence can shatter the peace of a community, and can only offer distant condolence and best wishes for all of you.

I think "gun regulation" is the phrase that might crack the nut.  Call it "sensible" or "common sense" or "emergency" or whatever qualifier makes the focus group needles twitch, but guns need to be regulated.  The word headlines the Second Amendment, so it can hardly be caricatured as un-American, although the goons and gun manufacturers behind them will try.

Guns are here, and their lack of regulation is exacting far too high a price on this country.  That needs fixing, the day before yesterday.  It can't be too soon to talk about it if it's already too late.

needs to get past our Supreme Court unless the 2nd Amendment is repealed or significantly altered.  So far, we've not had much luck in getting our Court to recognize the validity of even the most common sense gun regulation, notwithstanding their supposed affection for the Founders.

The only things struck down to date have been de facto absolute bans.

It's been a hundred years, isn't it time we stopped blaming Captain Smith for sinking the Titanic?

... or some variation thereof.  It is beyond appalling that so many the people are so aggressively assertive about the rights of unborn, while simultaneously OK with accepting this kind of carnage as the cost of "freedom."  Whatever the fuck "freedom" means in that context.
