After the Aurora massacre, or maybe it was the one after that but before this one, I was assured by a RKBA member that his right to carry a gun was greater than the right of someone else not to be killed by a mass murderer. After all, the right to bear arms is in the Constitution.

militia should the need arise, and thus the right to keep and bear arms in service of the Republic, should the need arise.

That is all that is guaranteed by the Constitution.

Is always present in some measure in life.

My response to it is cynicism, which I try to wipe away by listening to music, studying my favorite paintings, or reading good books. Or just digging deep inside to find some as yet undiscovered reservoir of generosity.

It can be a struggle, though.

Other people turn to guns. I'm not talking about the hunter/sportsman for whom the hunt is the aim and the gun merely a tool. I'm talking about people who buy and show guns whose only purpose is killing humans, and then boast and brag about them, or otherwise use them to intimidate and control people.

Those guns are holding back a tidal wave of powerlessness and despair that it's so easy to feel in modern society.

involved; a desire for community and self-selecting socialization, through gun "rights" cultures.

But back when the Constitution was written, the founders weren't able to predict that such a thing would arise.  They were not able to predict semiautomatics or automatic weapons.  They were not able to predict one culture setting itself against another in a debate around guns and gun use in this country, after the defeat of the colonial rule.
