  •  It's all part of the devaluing (13+ / 0-)

of education -- we're in a country where wanting kids to be able to go to college if they choose is being a "snob", and people who do choose to learn more about themselves and the world they live in are "elitists". I wouldn't consider me and my now-retired spouse as "elitists" in our little one-bedroom apartment, but I guess we are because we read books and magazines and newspapers and blogs.

My oldest niece is an elementary school teacher (4th grade this year; she's taught 5th in the past, depending where the need is in her school), still has about 20 years ahead of her (she turned 44 this year), and is wondering how much longer she'll be able to hang on...and she's in a suburban California school that still has it's share of kids on lunch assistance and who still has to ask parents to send a roll of paper towels or a box of Kleenex with their kids at the beginning of the year because there's no money in the budget for "frills" like those.

Then, we have to go out and bring in workers from other countries on H-1B visas (at way lower salaries, of course) because companies can't find "qualified" workers here.
