  •  I've seen a state NRA lobbyist in action (4+ / 0-)

With a mix of envy and fear. Envy because I was lobbying for a do-good non-profit that would have killed to have a fraction of the NRA's resources at their disposal. Fear because the man was so cold and mercenary in wielding threats, exactly as you'd cast an NRA lobbyist in a movie (think Willem Defoe in Platoon). He had an intensity about him that let you know it was personal and that he meant business.

When a key vote was coming up on one of his bills he would methodically work the local watering hole where legislators hung out and remind anyone who was even thinking of wavering that he was recruiting a primary candidate as they were speaking and that they could expect to wake up the next morning with billboards on every street corner and radio and TV ads on every station about how they voted to take grandma's gun away. Oh, and the money stream would come to an instant halt.

That said, I did see one of his bills lose by a small margin after opponents gained the support of the police union, backed by strong grassroots opposition to the bill from all corners of the state. So the NRA can be stopped. But it's far from easy and will take a highly mobilized grassroots movement to get there.

We MUST form that higly mobilized grassroots movement.  NOW.

It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything. ~~Joseph Stalin

about police organizations potentially being allies in this fight. Also doctors, I heard once there was a major medical association opposed to gun violence and calling for change (haven't googled that yet). Teachers' unions of course. Religious groups. There may be something like 'Moms against Gun Violence' soon, if not already. Beware the moms...

I love it that Obama's channeling Harry Truman: "I don't give 'em hell; I just tell the truth and they think it's hell!"
