  •  I've said this before and it bears repeating. (23+ / 0-)

Massachusetts has a very strong libertarian streak.  Its liberal reputation is based on its stances on social issues, not economic ones.  There are a lot of people here, especially in suburbia, who are very pro-choice, pro-same-sex marriage, and pro-laissez-faire capitalism.

Any Republican who sticks to economic issues and at least pays lip service to being pro-choice and pro-gay rights has a decent shot at being elected here.  That's how Rmoney got himself elected governor, and Bill Weld before him.

Elizabeth Warren benefited from riding Obama's coattails.  It's still possible she might have won in a non-presidential election year, but it would have been a lot closer.  Her margin of victory over Brown was substantially less than Obama's over Rmoney.

    •  Brown is beatable, but this sucks. (7+ / 0-)

Oh well. Who's heading to Mass to help with this work?
Or would that just irritate the people of the Commonwealth?

      •  Only if you call us when we tell you not to... (2+ / 0-)

... as in I told the Warren campaign when I contributed (pre-primary) that I would not be available to volunteer during the general election.  I even told them why (I have a preschooler and HerrDoktor was having surgery on Sept 10 that would keep him from being a primary caregiver until November).

They called me every damn week during September.  The first week of October a bigger wheel in the campaign made the mistake of calling me and I gave her an earful.

At which point they removed me from the e-mailing list as well.  They did call on Election Day (I was out voting), asking me if I needed a ride to the polls -- they knew HerrDoktor had already voted.

Build your DB to include availability and dates, and you'll have a lot friendlier reception.

    •  Except his vote (6+ / 0-)

On Blunt Amendment proves he's NOT really "pro Choice' nor very concerned about Women's reproductive rights.

Markey would / could drive that point very well!

he's been in the House listening to all of those debates on attacking Women's rights, 'legitimate rape"  and for sure he'd have no trouble what so ever discrediting Brown.

    •  Warren didn't win in a landslide (0+ / 0-)

She campaigned very very hard and was neck and neck lots of the summer. Her campaign organization was superb with local politicians going door to door and very well funded.

Brown was very dismissive towards her and I bet lots of women didn't like that.

If Brown repackages himself and runs away from the crazies in the GOP, he may do very well.

      •  He can repackage himself all he wants (4+ / 0-)

His votes against Wall Street reform and for the Blunt amendment still stand. His ridiculous comments about MA voting laws (which essentially called for Voter ID in MA) still stand. The video of him saying Scalia is his favorite SC justice still stands. He showed his hand big-time against Warren, and a 6-month beautification program won't change that -- and, what's more, Markey won't let him change that.

only reason that election was close was old fashioned sexism.

EW is the first woman to ever win statewide here.  She broke the jinx!

Brown won't get to run against a woman this time.
