even if Brown wins the special, he'd need to defend the seat in less than two years in a general election where senate and governor will be on the ballot. It would be a tough hold for him.

So another two years of a "decisive repudiation of the Democrats at the ballot box"?!?!? Where did I see this movie before? Oh, right. 2009.

And in 2 years it's an off year election. No Obama means no rock star Democratic Party top of the ticket to get the SMS generation into the booth. To raise money against the permanently funded right wing. Our down ticket candidates running on "now it's mandated that you buy insurance" against "the government is taking your tax $ and giving insurance to people who don't work and look like the President."

The only way this doesn't suck is a big Dem win in the special.

      •  Yep, (0+ / 0-)

Kerry's term is up in 2014, so there would be another election for the new term at that time.

It would suck if we lost the special. But even though 2014 will be an off-year electorate, there will still be much higher turnout than in a special. I think Brown would still be at best even money to hold the seat.

He might be smarter just to run for governor. Given the state's history of electing Republican governors periodically, his long-term chances would probably be much better there.

From where I sit, here in Mass., this is winnable but not going to be easy by any stretch. If Brown does win, we not only get Brown, back in the Senate and ready to run as an incumbent again in 2014, but a major media narrative about repudiation of the Democratic agenda.

Republicans...think the American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it. Harry S. Truman
