I think it's time for all of us -- pro-gun or pro gun control -- to wrestle with this issue. To pull out hair out and argue and educate ourselves and come to some conclusions. I think you're wrong to assert that liberals want to ban all guns -- most of us know that's not realistic or desirable. BUT we can adopt more sensible gun laws (unlike lawmakers in Michigan!), and learn more about the signs of mental illness, and reject the love of guns -- the temptation to reach for guns as a solution to multiple problems. We don't have a choice anymore -- we have to wrestle with this until mass shootings become a thing of the past.

The civil rights, gay rights and women's movements, designed to allow others to reach for power previously grasped only by white men, have made a real difference, and the outlines of 21st century America have emerged. -- Paul West of LA Times

I have a degree in said profession. Never practiced it. I ran a suicide hotline my senior year in college and it made me not want to work in the profession.

I was worried I've never get any closer but it pained me at levels I can't put to words to hear the problems of others.

We got a ton of folks that need help and they are not getting it.

was on cbs - one commentator explained the right wing hardliner takeover of the nra - how, before that occurred, the nra was at the forefront of gun control issues - advocating for tighter requirements.

i truly believe that rigidity in beliefs on EITHER side contributes to these issues.  the "my way or the highway" attitudes of the absolutists simply make people lock into their own views and not budge.

the word "pragmatist" around here keeps being sneered at yet until there is a reasonable "compromise" worked out by the extremes of both sides, nothing changes.

we need reason.  we need intelligent discourse.  we need to be working together instead of against each other.

we need to be doing this on many many issues.

gun control is just one of those.  FINALLY, maybe this will happen!
