this, if true, suggests that he does eventually pay his debts, something I was beginning to wonder.

    •  It's a fine line though (2+ / 0-)

There is something to be said for paying debts, but that shouldn't be the only factor in picking cabinet members. Case in point: Bush picking Michael Brown for FEMA despite his lack of experience with disaster management.

But in this case, Kerry obviously is very well qualified for the job...probably one of the most qualified people he could find. I don't think there's anyone in the Senate who has his level of experience with foreign policy (the only other person who did was Biden, and he's got another job).

let's just say I was less than happy with what happened to Howard Dean, who picked Barack Obama as one of the first "Dean Dozen."

And up to now, Kerry, who helped Obama massively in '04 and in '08, had gotten little in return that I can see.

Well, now he's got what he wants, and the rest of us are going to have to hop to and stop any unpleasant side effects from taking place.

        •  I was a big Dean supporter, and would have liked (0+ / 0-)

to see him get the HHS spot (although Sebelius was not a bad pick). But I think his putting Obama on the "Dean Dozen" was sort of jumping on the bandwagon. Obama was already a rising star at that point, I think. I am not saying he wasn't helped by being on the Dean Dozen, but I think it would be a stretch to say that he wouldn't have won his Senate seat without it.

          •  why bandwagoning? (0+ / 0-)

seems like supporting O. before he even won his Senate seat is being an early adopter, just like Kerry giving him the slot at the convention.

            •  Because everyone knew he would win the Senate seat (0+ / 0-)

I don't know exactly when the Dean Dozen began, but Dean did not drop out of the presidential race until after the Wisconsin primary in mid-February, and the Dean Dozen began after Dean for America became Democracy for America. I am pretty sure Illinois had its Senate primary sometime in March. So even if Dean endorsed Obama before the primary, it couldn't have been much before, and it was probably after his primary opponents had all imploded. And then as you recall, he had no serious opponent for the general election. So endorsing him for a seat he was almost guaranteed to win probably didn't help him nearly as much as giving him the keynote slot at the 2004 convention or endorsing him the day after he lost the New Hampshire primary in 2008.

On the other hand, I think Dean also helped Obama by laying the foundation for utilizing the Internet as a model for an upstart candidate. Also, his 50 state strategy as DNC chair undoubtedly helped Obama broaden the map in 2008.
