  •  An AR-15 (6+ / 0-)

can accept magazines that generally range from 10 rounds up to 30 rounds.  There are aftermarket magazines that will hold either 50, 60 or 100 rounds.

The firing rate depends on the shooter's ability to manipulate the trigger.  Generally, a reasonably proficient competitive shooter could cycle the trigger a few times per second.  The M-16 (the military equivalent with automatic fire capability) has an effective cycling rate of over 500 rounds per minute.  However, a magazine is typically 30 rounds, so sustained fire rates on automatic have been limited in most military applications to 3-round bursts and requires a reset of the trigger after every 3 rounds.

There are approximately 3,000,000 AR-15, M-4 or variants in civilian use today.  The design is about 50 years old.  There are numerous other semi-automatic rifles that compete for the same market.

A typical AR-15 will sell for  $900.  Features and customization can run that amount to well over $2000.
