  •  That's kinda how it works (9+ / 0-)

It's a lease deal where the homeowner pays a set monthly lease. The company sells the electricity onto the grid. The home owner buys power from the grid. The lease company pays a portion of the electric bill depending on how much is generated. In summertime the homeowner only pays the lease, in winter they also pay for electricity if they use more (at retail) than they produce (at  wholesale).
My Aunt put one on her roof here in CT, it's about 15' by 20' and produces all the electricity her house uses, 7 or 8 months/year.
From what I understand, there are new technologies in development for Solar that will make them a)cheaper still and b)able to trap more wavelengths of solar power than just the visible and to trap it from steeper angles.
How soon they get here is the multi-billion dollar question.
The thing that solar works best for is low-voltage and works best with a battery in the system.
That's not a good fit for high voltage (110 or 220V) systems. But it works perfectly for charging up cell phones, iPods, any number of low voltage gadgets that you currently use a wall wart for. Low voltage is also perfect for LED lighting.
Systems with a car type battery and a panel that can charge it and your gadgets and runs a few lights are already available to homeowners in a much lower price range than enough PV cells to run your big appliances, like water pump or washer/dryer.
It's an entry-level to solar home if you don't want to lease. (It also replaces those wall warts that are on all the time they are plugged in and are wasting, by some estimates, up to 1% of the energy we use! Little vampires.)
Where those leases make more sense is on commercial property, Big Boxes and malls, factories and warehouses, all those big flat roofs.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
