My husband teaches 8th grade social studies, we live in the boondocks of Kentucky. People (including family) have been blaming the schools, condemning teachers and screaming for more guns. Demanding that we put god back in school to prevent this, oh, and arm the teachers with assault weapons. No one ever told the kids they could not practice their religion, it's not Sunday school though and there are no religious icons on the walls. If the kids wish to pray, they may do so silently. Ash Wednesday many of the kids wear ash marks all day at school, no one would dream of asking them to wash it off.
I'm not sure what it is we have done to destroy religion. 3 days ago I was happy and hopeful looking forward to a wonderful Christmas with my family. Today, I am heartbroken for such pain and loss and blamed for the loss. I am in shock, and have sunk into despair because we are being blamed for such an act of horror. The right have become the criminally insane leading the completely stupid. I'm out of hope for our future, they refuse to let us have one. I wish you luck with the conservatives, I do. But I don't think they are capable of listening to reason anymore.

You're right on the merits of your entire argument; sometimes people need to exhaust themselves before they'll quiet down and listen to reason.

As for us activists, I don't think that we can avoid despair altogether, but we can try to make sure that it's a temporary condition.  Persevere!  The struggle continues.
