  •  My daughter is a teacher (13+ / 0-)

she told me today about practicing hiding the kids in her art room twice a year.  She says that she is clearly quite fearful of going to work tomorrow, and has been coping Over this past weekend by staying busy.

I am a college professor, and have also given this some thought, but not as much of a plan.

Last year, we had a clearly troubled young woman who I just could not let progress on to become a  nurse--she was simply unsafe and incompetent, (and dishonest, to the point of making up patient data) and this would be her third class she failed. A day or so before we met with her, I found out her boyfriend is a cop.  The meeting, with unarmed security nearby went OK, but for several weeks-months after I thought she might come back to target me.    I verbalized my fear to a colleague, and asked her to tell my daughters, if anything happened, that I had done the right thing.

    •  and my kids have to practice (5+ / 0-)

drills for this sort of thing.

It is sickening.  It was never like this when I was growing up.

    •  Also a college professor (7+ / 0-)

and we have doors that are mostly window so hiding is not an option. I've had students who like to talk about shooting (many vets, many rural kids) and at least one who dressed in black and talked about building bombs. I can't retire soon enough.

beam me up Scotty- there's no intelligent life down here

and our students would go ballistic if our classroom doors were locked.

and i had a very, very angry student a couple of years ago who had lived in a violent environment and was working with women escaping a violent environment.

my department chair gave me no help at all.

universities have no such plans or drills.  administrators simply are incompetent to deal with real problems where i teach.

we are busy being brutal to our students and faculty.

this is the model now.  our provost is a declared neo-liberal.

        good times in 'merica
