  •  My theory is very simple and has 0 to do with guns (14+ / 0-)

The "Reagan Revolution" was really the Ayn Rand revolution. Her philosophy found any sense of collective action or community repugnant to the romantic notion of the rugged idealist, who doesn't need your stinkin' health care, who will send his child to a non-public school, who will buy his own books rather than go to a public library and might just blow up a building if it looks like it might be used by poor people.

The selfishness and rootlessness and lack of connection in American society was exhibited best in our response to Katrina: Nothing. Sean Penn got in a boat and the Coast Guard defied orders and rescued some people. And some Baptists brought sandwiches. Collective action and a sense of mutual empathy and responsibility toward our fellow Americans is despised. All of that filters down and has resulted in our mutual dehumanization of one another, which is reflected in any online comments section, in our voting paterns, in Rush Limbaugh and.....well, everyone hates everyone. The country's mental health is very poor and this has NOTHING to do with guns other than the fact that our fetish with guns reflects that sociopathic lack of stability and empathy that has come to be part of the American character.

If you hate government, don't run for office in that government.
