    The answer is that your knowledge that a person is intelligent and sane is probably not quite accurate. After all, if they assert that Obama's gonna take yer gunns aweigh, they probably aren't all that skilled in rational and objective thinking. Why do people believe that Steven Hawking is right when he "proves" that God doesn't exist?

    Heinlein has something to say about this fallacy:

    Expertise in one field does not carry over into other fields. But experts often think so. The narrower their field of knowledge the more likely they are to think so.
    It's helpful to know that our trusted experts tend to behave as if they're experts in everything. But nobody is an expert in everything. Their behavior is perfectly normal, but our assumptions about their expertice are probably questionable.
