    . . . one of the pitfalls of electronic communication that far too few of us consider. If you strip our words of their interpersonal clues, then even a word meant in kindness can hurt.

    One thing that I like to think I've learned is to read my words while imagining that I am my correspondent. If I, as my correspondent, had just written whatever it is I, in my respondent role, am responding to, how would I react to the response? Is there another way of putting it that is less prone to misinterpretation? Can anything I have written be construed as personal, or too close to personal to allow through the filter?

    I read responses to some seemingly innocous comments in some diaries and can't help but think, "Man, I'll bet the respondent wants that one back." I hope my thoughts are correct.
